When you fall in love, you get into an investment: an investment of commitment, time, faith and trust. And you know that when you fall in love, you take risks believing that at the end of the day, you will be able to get what you want. But it's not always smooth sailing. There might be unfortunate events that will test the relationship. But no matter what difficulties may come, the important thing is you stay.
Investing is very much like love. It's building a relationship between you and your goals. It will require from you the same values in order for you to meet your objective. Likewise, there are uncertainties along the way. But isn't that what makes each journey exciting? After all, risks are justified by the rewards that we hope to attain.
For Sir Leo Ocampo, he got the best of both worlds. Love pushed him to start investing and it drove him to continue.
His investment experience started back in 2007. With his knowledge from being a relationship manager, he started investing for the purpose of building up funds for his wedding with his then- girlfriend. "Since risk taker ako, nilagay ko sa equity funds noong time na 'yon. Tapos nung mga 2008 na siya, siguro naka-gain na ako ng mga 10 to 20%…"
Everything was faring well until the global financial crisis hit. Thousands of investors started to lose money and Sir Leo was not an exception. Did he fret?
He decided to stay and listened to his friend. The economy is now starting to recover, but things on his personal life started to get cloudy. Now that he lost his initial goal, he then became clueless of what is his investments are for. Yung kinita ng funds ko sa stocks, yun yung nagamit kong pang down and last year na-turn over na siya [bahay]. Ngayon, nag-mo-monthly na ako." Apparently, he shifted goals and ended up buying a house and lot using the earnings from his fund.
Sir Leo's greatest lesson from his investment journey is that you should not let fear grip you and redirect your focus from reaching your objectives.
Not only did his investment journey help him become more financially fit, but it also honed his skills as a Relationship Manager. "If you have an experience doon sa fund, mae-explain mo nang mabuti sa clients. Sabi ko, ikaw din pwede ka maglagay kahit saan divan basta sundin mo lang yung recommended allocation naming then it's up to you kung saan mo gusto.
And for those who haven't invested yet, Sir Leo has a simple message: "Try lang nila.
Indeed, to achieve a huge goal is a life-changer for everyone. For Sir Leo, he did this by remaining invested and with this he maximized the potential returns of his investments. From his story, you will see that it does not take patience and commitment for you to arrive at your chosen destination.
Not everyone is blessed with both love and money. But for Sir Leo, a double happy ending may be just around the corner. Not only was he able to purchase a new house, but he and his girlfriend also got back together a few years ago. Soo… will wedding bells soon be ringing around Buendia area?
